Ukrainian Expert on Ukrainian Crops, Pests, Diseases, Weeds

 The USAID Agriculture and Rural Development Support (ARDS) Project is a four-year, $20 million effort to that supports broad-based, resilient economic growth through a more inclusive, competitive, and better-governed agriculture that provides attractive livelihoods in rural areas of Ukraine.

 Position Description

The Expert on pesticides will help to implement technical tasks of ARDS project. The following activities have been planned to achieve the goal:

The expert must conduct a qualitative analysis of pesticides used in agricultural production, develop recommendations to reduce the negative impact on food security, the environment and the right people. For this expert will perform the following work:

1. Looking up, cross-checking and writing in the descriptions of each pest/disease/weed, stage and the damage it causes to each Ukraine target crop already analyzed in 2015.
2. For each of the 55 new Ukraine crops identified in 2017, primary production constraints: pests (insects, mites, nematodes, snails, slugs, rodents, other mammals, birds); diseases (fungi, oomycetes, viruses, viroids, phytoplasmas, protozoa, bacteria, rickettsia); and weeds (annual and perennial grasses, broadleaf weeds and sedges).
3. Research and compile descriptions of each pest/disease/weed and the damage it causes/symptoms, for each of the newly identified crops for 2017.
4. Conducting other tasks as requested by the international Pest Management Specialist.

Term of assignment: up to 2 months from the start date of the service agreement.      

Qualifications

• In-depth knowledge of problems associated with using pesticides and mitigating their environmental and health effects
• Good awareness of the agricultural lands phytosanitary status, alternative methods of pest control and prevention of pests spreading, ability to predict entomological and plant pathology threats
• Outstanding analytical skills, practical experience in doing analysis, drawing conclusions and recommendations
• Proficient knowledge of the farming industry structure, environmental protection problems and ways to mitigate adverse effects on people and animals
• At least 5 years of experience in phytosanitary security and environmental protection
• Excellent communication skills, knowledge of English
