Fulbright Program in UkraineKennan Institute Kyiv Office are pleased to invite you to a lecture “Crisis, conflict and critical diplomacy:  Narratives and perceptions of the EU in Ukraine” by ProfessorNataliaChabanandProfessorBenO’Loughlin, to be held on Monday, November 27, at5 p.m. at the Fulbright Office (20 Esplanadna Street, Suite 904, M “Palats Sportu”, Kyiv).

The event will be moderated by Professor Svitlana Zhabotynska, Cherkasy Bohdan Khmelnytskyi National University, Fulbright Scholar Program, 1994-1995, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, IL, 2000-2001, University of California.

Professor Natalia Chaban is a Jean Monnet Chair, Head of European and EU Studies and European Languages at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand) and Deputy Director of the National Centre for Research on Europe at the same University. Prof. Chaban is the President of Ukrainian Studies Association of Australia and New Zealand and co-editor of the peer-reviewed “Australian and New Zealand Journal of European Studies”.  Natalia is an alumna of the Muskie Program (administered by the USIA/OSI): she completed her MA at New York University in 1996.  She is also a recipient of a fellowship awarded by RSEP (2000-2001) at the University of Maryland at College Park. Prof. Chaban widely publishes on the topic of external perceptions, political communication and political psychology in international relations and foreign policy (including articles in such high impact journals as Journal of Common Market Studies, Journal of European Integration, Cooperation and Conflict, Foreign Policy Analysis, Mobilities, Comparative European Politics, Asian Security).  Since 2002, she has been co-leading transnational research “EU Global Perceptions” (30 countries) and a comparative project “NATO Perceptions in the Asia-Pacific” (6 countries, 2014-17), supported by the European Commission and Asia Europe Foundation, and NATO’s Science for Peace and Security Program respectively. In 2015-18, she leads a 9-country project – Jean Monnet Research Network supported by Erasmus+ of the European Commission — about EU perceptions and public diplomacy in the conflicted neighbourhoods – Ukraine, Israel and Palestine.

Dr. Ben O’Loughlin is Professor of International Relations and Co-Director of the New Political Communication Unit at Royal Holloway, University of London. He completed his doctorate at the University of Oxford in 2005. Dr. O’Loughlin is an expert in international political communication. He has completed a number of projects explaining how power and influence operate in relations between media, policymakers and publics. In recent years he has built up the theory strategic narratives in the book Strategic Narratives: Communication Power and the New World Order (New York: Routledge, 2013) and in a volume of case studies entitled Forging the World: Strategic Narratives and International Relations (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 2017). He is co-editor of the Sage journal Media, War & Conflict. Dr. O’Loughlin has published research in leading journals including the Journal of CommunicationJournalismInternational Affairs, and Review of International Studies. In 2013-14 he was Specialist Advisor to the House of Lords Committee on Soft Power and UK Influence and published the report Power and Persuasion in the Modern World. His research on media and conflict has been supported by grants from the Economic and Social Research Council, UK Technology Strategy Board, the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure, the European Commission and the British Council.
