During World War II more than 2000 persons from 17 countries were kept as prisoners in this concentration camp set up by the Gestapo. The main groups of prisoners were forced laborers who came from the Netherlands and the former Soviet Union. Their punishment also used to serve as a deterrent to more than 25000 other women, men and children who were forced to forced labor in the Osnabrueck region. Almost half of them came from the Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. The young memorial site Augustaschacht has been gradually built up for the last sixteen years mostly due to the involvement of motivated volunteers. The memorial and research site displays the history of forced labour and National Socialism in the region of Osnabrueck.

Type of Work: Help with the excavation of the former camp territory. The volunteers of this camp will support the construction of the memorial site and learn more about the history of WW II and its consequences.

Study Theme: Dispute with WW II history; given a concrete example, the volunteers will strengthen their awareness about forced labour work, Nazi history and their causes and effects. Interviews will be held with jewish immigrants who witnessed the war and the holocaust in the ex Sowjet-Union. These people immigrated to Munster, Germany around 15-25 years ago and therewith build a bridge among past and future, Germany and Russia/Ukraine. Trips to Osnabrück and the Netherlands are planned as well.

Accommodation: In a house of the German Red Cross (Local group Holzhausen)

Requirements: Volunteers must be broad-minded, open for new perspectives, interested in the topic and intercultural encounters. The camp is open to volunteers from Germany and Ukraine.

Approximate Location: Georgsmarienhütte, near Osnabrück Georgsmarienhuette is located in Lower Saxony near the city of Osnabrueck. It values intercultural exchange and therefore has a twin city in Israel.

Project's topic is Antiracism, antifascism, remembrance.
